Bright key facts / Deployed
Ohio put large new computing loads on a longer power contract.
An AEP Ohio tariff effective July 23, 2025 requires a load study for new or expanding data-center requests of at least 25 megawatts and creates minimum-demand, collateral and cancellation obligations.
- AI’s role
- AI is part of the demand for data-center capacity; the policy result here is a utility and regulatory response to the infrastructure needed to serve that demand.
- Documented result
- The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio adopted AEP Ohio’s data-center tariff on July 9, 2025, and AEP lists it as effective July 23. Requests at or above 25 megawatts enter a paid load-study process; the tariff also sets minimum-demand, collateral and cancellation provisions.
- Important limitation
- The tariff is a cost-allocation mechanism, not evidence that household bills fell.
