OpenAI’s new AI test starts with the work of everyday life
LifeVal asks whether AI can help with responsibilities beyond the office. The useful next question is how much work people still have to do themselves.
- AI’s role
- LifeVal evaluates AI assistants on tasks involving browser use, computer use and connected tools across everyday responsibilities.
- Documented result
- OpenAI’s new LifeVal evaluation, announced November 2, brings that everyday work into the picture. The company says it built the evaluation around areas where people want help from personal AI assistants, drawing on time-use research and a demographically representative survey of 3,995 respondents. The tasks span care, household administration, education, shopping, personal finances and public services.
- Important limitation
- LifeVal is a developer-reported evaluation. Its displayed scores should not be read as the probability that an arbitrary household will successfully complete the same task. Bright has not independently reproduced the evaluation or tested its examples. This announcement does not establish that every illustrated workflow is available to every ChatGPT user.
