A city-owned reuse loop cut one data-center campus’s demand for potable groundwater.

Quincy owns and operates a reuse utility financed by Microsoft. EPA estimates that recirculating cooling-water blowdown avoids 138 million gallons a year of potable-groundwater demand; the loop still needs canal and groundwater make-up water.

AI’s role
The system supports a data-center campus that provides computing capacity; the documented result is water infrastructure, not a claim about any one AI model.
Documented result
EPA reports that the Quincy Water Reuse Utility began operating June 30, 2021. Microsoft financed $31 million in capital and operating costs under a 30-year agreement. EPA estimates 138 million gallons per year of potable-groundwater demand avoided and also reports 260 million gallons per year of Columbia Basin Project canal make-up water, primarily in summer.
Important limitation
Avoided potable demand is not the same as total water withdrawal or consumption.
