# OpenAI’s new AI test starts with the work of everyday life

Agent contract: 1.2.0

LifeVal asks whether AI can help with responsibilities beyond the office. The useful next question is how much work people still have to do themselves.

## OpenAI’s new AI test starts with the work of everyday life

Finding childcare. Sorting out a move. Getting the right documents together before an application deadline. These are not usually the tasks that headline a new AI benchmark. They are, however, the kinds of unfinished jobs that can occupy an evening.

OpenAI’s new LifeVal evaluation, announced November 2, brings that everyday work into the picture. The company says it built the evaluation around areas where people want help from personal AI assistants, drawing on time-use research and a demographically representative survey of 3,995 respondents. The tasks span care, household administration, education, shopping, personal finances and public services. [OpenAI’s announcement](https://openai.com/index/lifeval/)

## From a useful answer to a finished task

The examples include comparing kindergarten options after a move, coordinating flood-preparation volunteers and arranging a way to watch a game remotely with a relative. OpenAI presents model scores and sample interactions, arguing that an assistant needs to do more than offer advice. It describes improvements in browser use, computer use and connected tools as part of that direction. [LifeVal examples](https://openai.com/index/lifeval/)

For Bright, the significant shift is in the question being asked. Can a system help someone complete something they already need to do, rather than simply demonstrate an impressive capability?

Consider a school comparison as an illustration, not a Bright test result. A polished table is useful only if the schools actually fit the family's situation, the dates are current and the next steps are clear. A parent should not have to repeat the entire search to discover whether the answer can be trusted. Nor should an assistant quietly make a consequential choice that belongs to the family.

That is where everyday assistance becomes more demanding than a fluent response. The work includes checking details, recognizing missing information and knowing when to ask the person to decide.

## What this does and does not establish

LifeVal is a developer-reported evaluation. Its displayed scores should not be read as the probability that an arbitrary household will successfully complete the same task. Bright has not independently reproduced the evaluation or tested its examples. This announcement does not establish that every illustrated workflow is available to every ChatGPT user. A useful next layer of evidence would follow people through actual tasks. How much time did they save after checking the output? How often did they need to start over? Could someone new to AI get the same benefit without expert help? Did the assistant respect the person's budget, access needs and right to make the final decision?

Those questions matter because the value of an assistant is not identical to its score. A system could perform well in a structured assessment yet still be difficult to use in a household with incomplete records, changing plans or limited time to supervise it.

## The opportunity is ordinary, and substantial

Our reading is that LifeVal points toward a more useful public conversation about AI progress: less emphasis on what a model can say, and more attention to what people can accomplish with it.

The benchmark is a starting point, not the endpoint. The outcome worth pursuing is an evening returned to a caregiver, an application completed correctly or a family able to make a better-informed choice. Those are outcomes to measure, not benefits to assume from a demonstration.
