Start with the measurement, the geography and the time period—not a household analogy.

## Power and energy answer different questions

A megawatt measures a rate of power. A megawatt-hour measures energy delivered over time. A proposed 500-megawatt connection is not evidence that a facility continuously consumed 500 megawatts, and it cannot be converted into annual electricity without an explicit load factor and operating period.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory estimates that U.S. data centers used 176 terawatt-hours in 2023, or 4.4% of national electricity consumption. Its 325–580 terawatt-hour range for 2028 is a scenario range under uncertain growth and efficiency assumptions—not a reading from the future and not a forecast for AI alone.

## Ask what sits inside the boundary

A facility meter includes servers, cooling, power conversion and other onsite loads. A regional estimate may combine colocation, hyperscale and smaller enterprise facilities. Queue requests can include projects that never operate. Bright keeps those categories apart before comparing numbers.

## Limitations

The national estimate cannot predict one facility’s demand.

The 2028 range is modeled, not observed.

Electricity use alone does not establish emissions, grid cost or public value.
