What space data centers could do for people

The hardware already in orbit and the engineering still needed

AI’s role
Selected onboard AI workflows, orbital inference demonstrations and terrestrial distributed-training experiments inform distinct possible uses of computing in space.
Documented result
A computer in orbit can now answer a question sent from Earth. On 30 October, Google reported that its first Project Suncatcher prototype had run Gemma 4 onboard and returned a response during a pass over Svalbard. The experiment followed an October launch. Thermal and radiation testing continues, and a pair of interconnected satellites remains a planned 2027 milestone. Google has not disclosed the sustained throughput, availability or full cost needed to judge it as a commercial service. Google’s flight update
Important limitation
Progress at each level can help the next. It does not certify it. Running an AI model in orbit establishes something important about hardware and operations. It does not establish the price, availability or environmental advantage of a future industrial-scale service.
