Construction and operations are different workforces
Construction can bring electricians, pipefitters, HVAC and cooling specialists, equipment operators, laborers, and project managers to a site for a defined build. Operations continue after that peak with hardware and network technicians, electrical and mechanical facilities teams, logistics, security, incident response, and site management. Some are employees and some are contractors.
New Albany’s 2024 financial report describes about 200 existing employees at Meta’s campus and 1,200 construction workers on the expansion site. It labels approximately 300 campus employees and 1,800 construction workers as future estimates. The report does not turn any of those figures into local hires, job-years, direct employees, or a wage claim.

One person’s path from construction into operations
Google’s 2022 profile says KP Philpot worked as a contractor’s site-safety engineer while a data center was being built, then joined Google as an Environmental Health and Safety Manager at Alphabet’s Douglas County campus.
He describes safety work around electricity, environmental work connected to the cooling-water system, and coordination across construction workers, engineers, managers and operations staff. This is an employer-published person-scale account, not a placement rate, wage record or representative route into the sector.

One documented route into technician work
Saint Martin’s University’s Washington Vets 2 Tech pathway is a 12-week academic certificate for transitioning service members, veterans, and military spouses. The university says the program combines instruction, technical labs, professional development, server troubleshooting, inventory and logistics, and operational-incident response. Candidates must meet military-affiliation rules and be willing to relocate.
Saint Martin’s reports that 19 of 20 Spring 2026 graduates received Oracle offers for U.S. data-center sites, with average starting salaries of about $80,000 plus relocation allowances. Those figures belong to this cohort and come from the university; they are not an audited national placement rate or wage.

How to read—and pursue—an opportunity
Start with the system you want to maintain. Hardware and network roles commonly emphasize troubleshooting and systems knowledge. Facilities roles commonly emphasize electrical, mechanical, controls, generator, and cooling experience. Logistics and site-operations roles add inventory, coordination, safety, and incident response. Then read the actual posting for location, shift, credentials, travel, and employment type.
Google’s careers page is useful as a map of those role families, but its Kristina video does not provide a transcript, wage, training path or staffing denominator in the reviewed source material. For a training program, ask who is eligible, how long it lasts, what credential it awards, whether an employer interview or offer is conditional, how many people began and completed, how many accepted jobs, where those jobs are, and when the outcome was measured.

What this guide does not establish
- The Saint Martin’s placement and wage figures are college-reported and cohort-specific.
- The Google worker account and role guide are employer-published; neither supplies a representative wage or staffing ratio.
- Construction workers, permanent employees, contractors, job-years, and indirect estimates remain separate measures.
